Fifth grade is decimals and fractions in earnest. Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, multiplying and dividing decimals, order of operations, ratios, and an introduction to coordinate planes all show up. Word problems get longer too — multi-step, multi-operation, with the occasional irrelevant number tossed in to test reading.

Pre-algebra peeks in: variables, simple equations like x + 7 = 15, and patterns in number sequences. For breaks: medium sudoku, logic grids, code-breaking puzzles, and 20×20 mazes. Treat them like the older kids they're becoming.
