How to use this maze generator
- Choose a difficulty preset — Easy (10×10) for ages 4–5, Medium (15×15) for ages 6–7, Hard (20×20) for ages 8–9, and Extra Hard (28×28) for ages 10 and up. Or use the width and height sliders for a custom size.
- Click New maze to generate a fresh one. The start arrow sits at the top-left and the finish flag at the bottom-right.
- Stuck? Tick Show solution for a dashed answer line. Untick it before printing if the kids should solve it themselves.
- Click Print maze (or press Ctrl/Cmd + P). Only the maze prints — headers, controls, and footer are hidden automatically.
Why mazes are great for kids
Mazes look like a quiet activity, but a lot is happening on the page. Kids work three skills at once that show up later in reading, math, and handwriting:
- Spatial reasoning. Tracing a path forces a child to plan ahead, picture turns before they happen, and rotate the route mentally — the same skills used to read maps and lay out diagrams.
- Problem-solving and persistence. Dead ends teach kids to back up, try another route, and stick with a puzzle long enough to finish. That habit transfers to word problems and any task with more than one step.
- Pencil control and pre-writing. Keeping a line inside narrow corridors trains the small hand muscles needed for letter formation, especially for ages 4–6 who are still building grip strength.
Picking the right size
- Ages 4–5: Easy (10×10). Big corridors, short solving time, lots of small wins.
- Ages 6–7: Medium (15×15). A real puzzle but still finishable in a few minutes.
- Ages 8–9: Hard (20×20). Multiple decision points and longer dead ends.
- Ages 10+: Extra Hard (28×28). A genuinely tricky maze for older kids and adults.
